About David Sandbrook FRICS
I am a Chartered Mineral Surveyor and Chartered Planner who has enjoyed a career spanning over 40 years in the minerals and waste management sectors, dealing with estate management, asset valuation and project development.
Having started my career working for two large mineral companies, I have been a consultant for over 35 years and now run my own firm, Sandbrook Land & Minerals Limited.
Over the last 35 years I have been engaged with the RICS, flying the minerals flag, volunteering at regional, national and global levels, including over 7 fulfilling years on Governing Council.
What skill have you valued the most as your career has developed and how have you built those skills?
I have been fortunate to have worked with some amazing people, from a diverse variety of backgrounds, throughout my career and I quickly learnt the importance of listening to what they have to say and learning from their varied experiences. This has taught me the importance of communication, to being kind to others and respecting differing views. Now I have the joy of passing on these skills as mentor to more recent entrants to the profession.
What has been the biggest achievement or project of your career so far?
I have been lucky to have participated in some hugely interesting development projects and corporate transactions throughout my career, but the most rewarding project has been a pro bono role. Due to my practical and corporate experience, I was appointed as a Director of the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust and recently became involved in the sale of a major asset, a mineral and waste management business, and the subsequent distribution of significant sums to the Trust’s three nominated charities NSPCC, Barnardo’s and RSPCA for a series of transformational projects.
What encouragement would you give to students and the younger generation to get them interested in a career in surveying?
I think the same benefits apply today that encouraged me to become a surveyor and, more recently, my son to become a surveyor.
A career in surveying is boundless, it presents opportunities across the globe and for every property types, allowing you to follow your passions, whether that be urban development, rural property, renewable energy or specialist areas like minerals or sports stadia.
Surveying allows you to make a sustainable difference to the built and natural environments. And you don’t have to work in an office from 9 to 5 !
